Director of Finance and Resources

Fixed term contract until 31st March 2011 (circa 45k, subject to job evaluation)

Working in partnership with local residents and public and private organisations, Back on the Map is the project driving regeneration in Sunderland's historic East End and Hendon.  Back on the Map Ltd, with a budget of £54 million, is one of the largest New Deal for Communities (NDC) projects in the UK funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government and was one of the first to establish itself as an independent partnership company.  The organisation has already achieved much but still has many challenging goals to deliver before the NDC programme completion date of 2011.

Back on the Map Ltd is now moving into a critical transitional phase in its development.  We are still providing a broad range of regeneration interventions in the area, and an exciting programme of major housing improvements is just starting.  Back on the Map Ltd is delivering this housing programme directly, and it includes managing a growing portfolio of housing and land for development.

At the same time we are developing the Company's succession strategy.  This is likely to involve a change to charitable status, new governance arrangements and new partnerships and working arrangements leading into and beyond April 2011.  It will inevitably involve a restructuring of the team.

Through the retirement of the existing post holder, the position of Director of Finance and Resources will become vacant in October 2009.  Reporting to the Chief Executive and forming part of the organisation's executive team, the principal responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Finance and Resources
  • Governance
  • HR and training
  • IT
  • Communications
  • Facilities Management
  • Health & Safety

The job holder will also be required to deputise for the Chief Executive as and when required.

To be successful in the role, you should hold an appropriate accountancy and/or secretarial qualification.  You must have prior experience at a senior level of managing and developing financial and administrative systems; leading teams through change; supporting Trustees through changes in governance and acting as the Company Secretary; providing management on diverse issues such as HR, IT, Health and Safety, and the facilities management of assets.  Knowledge of the charitable sector is also essential.

Back on the Map Limited is based in the area it serves in Sunderland's East End and Hendon and encourages applications from all sectors of the community in line with its principles of participation and inclusion.  Under-represented groups include local residents, people from ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.  Being a small organisation, flexibility and team working are essential as well as a commitment to the challenging goals that the organisation has set for itself.  This is a full time role based upon a normal working week of 37 hours and carries an attractive range of employment benefits.
