Facts and Figures
By 2011, the People's Fund will have allocated £350,000 to community projects in Hendon and the East End.
Some of the projects that residents have voted to fund:
- Equipment to enable young people from Sunderland Catholic Youth Centre to complete the Duke of Edinburgh award
- A daytrip for older people who go to East Community Association's ‘older people's pop-in'
- A new photocopier for the Friends of Sunderland Old Parish Church
- A new stage for East Community Association to enable them to hold drama workshops
- Promoting a charity walk for local women raising money for testicular cancer
- Music events in the area run by Music for All
- A bond scheme run by YMCA to enable young people to move into their own accommodation
- A computer suite for the 3L's Association
- Promoting Sunderland's shipbuilding heritage with a replica of HMS Venerable to be built by the Maritime Heritage Society
- New equipment and a training sessions for a women's football team, to increase their footballing skills and fitness
- Additional CCTV cameras for an old people's home, to help with their peace of mind
- Residents of three local high rise flats have kitted out a basement room of the towers with equipment for hairdressing, a sauna and a computer room
- Digital cameras and software to enable residents from a young people's shelter to create short stories about their life which will be shown to other young people in the same situation to give them more options and opportunities
- Mirrors for a youth centre's performing arts and dance project
- Equipment to enable local residents to take part in courses on basic car mechanics
