Construction Challenge

The project recruited  young adults aged 18 and over from the Back on the Map area onto a 50 weeks construction traineeship with a range of local employers including Sunderland Housing Group and Frank Haslam Milan.  This enabled  people who are unemployed and not engaged in learning to have an entry route into the construction industry. Every beneficiary was be trained to a full National Vocational Qualification level 2 qualification in a construction trade, e.g. bricklaying, joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, scaffolding and general construction operatives.   Candidates also gained a Construction Skills Certification Scheme registration and employment with a local employer. On completion they were offered progression onto a National Vocational Qualification level 3 qualifications and remain in employment ideally with the original employer.  The Construction Challenge project was a unique pilot.  It was innovative and brought together many partners and agencies i.e. Back on the Map Employment Theme Team, Hendon Job Linkage, City of Sunderland Colleges, Training Providers, Sunderland Housing Group, Jobcentre plus, Local Authority and local employers.
